Music Research Guide

Use this guide to find UNO library resources and other helpful research tools in Music.

Books

Criss Library is organized using the Library of Congress Call Number system. Scores are in the M section, books on music are ML and MT.

  • M notated music (scores).
  • ML literature of music (biographies, histories, discographies, thematic indexes, etc.)
  • MT musical instruction and study (methods, studies and exercises intended for pedagogical use (as opposed for concert use) music theory, music-appreciation, etc.; includes scores and books)

Search Criss Library and beyond

Finding Scores at Criss Library

  1. Use the search bar on our library home page or the box above to enter your search term. This could be a composer, title of score, instrument, etc. If it is something like "high voice" then use quotation marks to search.

  2. Click the Search button.

  3. Filter your results to show just music scores using Score filter on the left side of the page.

If we don’t have the item in our collection, you may not see the score listed, or may not see an option for score.
Proceed with the following steps:

  1. Toggle the Expand my results button at the top of the filter list.

  2. (If necessary) Filter your results again to show just music scores using Score filter on the left side of the page.

  3. Click on the item.

  4. Sign in to your library account under the How to get it section.

  5. Request item through interlibrary loan with your interlibrary loan username and password.

Catalog Search Tips

Sign in using your NetID to:

  • See restricted articles if you're not on campus.
  • Request materials via Interlibrary Loan.
  • Renew items in your account, see your requests, or see what you have checked out.
  • Save your search results for future use in "My Favorites." Click on the pin icon and it will automatically be saved.
  • Save your search queries and receive alerts when new items are added that match those searches.

Start searching

  • Enter search words to search by keyword. By default the bar on this guide searches "Library Catalog". This will return items at UNO Libraries. You can also search “Everything," "Articles," "Network Catalog" which will search all the library in the University of Nebraska System, or “Course Reserves.”  
  • Click on "Advanced Search" to search by subject, title, or author fields. "Advanced Search" gives you many options to limit your search—by material type, date, language, etc. Or, you can filter your results after searching.

Refine your results

  • Use the filters on the left-hand side of the screen to limit your results by date ,resource type, location, language, and more.
