First-Year Writing Library Instruction

Three-day Outcomes

First instruction day

  1. Students will articulate why they need reliable source material for their research papers through reflection about the “big ideas” of information and research. (5-7 min) 

  2. (If needed) Students will create a working research question for the week's work from a rudimentary topic. (15 min) 

  3. Students will develop a list of keywords from their research question. (25 min) 

  4. (If #2 not needed) Students will experiment with at least one database to test their list of keywords. (15 min) 

 

Second instruction day

  1. Students will summarize the key features of each database. (35 min) 

  2. Students will experiment with at least one database to test their list of keywords. (10 min) 

 

Third instruction day

  1. Students will demonstrate the steps of discovery from popularly reported online news item to original scientific source (5 min) 

  2. Students will determine viewpoint and bias of source material. (35 min) 

  3. Students will reflect on the week’s activities in order to transfer knowledge to future college-level research projects. (2 min)

Two-day Outcomes
