Access Ebooks in the EBL Online Reader

Click the Read Online button to open the ebook in the EBL Online Reader, or click to access a specific chapter or section from the table of contents.

When reading a title online, you can navigate using the table of contents on the left, scroll bar on the right or page options at the top. The tool bar above the ebook also allows you to resize the text, copy and print, switch between image and PDF view in your browser window, look up terms in the dictionary or use the read aloud function. The tabs to the left of the ebook provide additional options:

  • Details – View title information, current loan status, and copy and print allowances
  • Contents Navigate the table of contents
  • Notes – Add or access any of your bookmarks or notes
  • Search – Search the full text of the ebook
  • Download – Download the ebook to a laptop or desktop computer, or mobile device

You can browse the full text of the title for a period of time.  When your browsing period has elapsed, you will typically be prompted to borrow the ebook. Click the Yes button if you would like to continue reading the ebook. You may receive a similar prompt if you choose to print or copy pages before the initial browsing period has elapsed.

Note: Some loans are required to be mediated. In such instances, you will be prompted to submit a request form, and your institution will notify you via email upon approval.

Note: If you are working on a public computer that is shared by others (e.g., in your library), you should always choose to read ebooks online via the EBL Online Reader.

Download to a laptop or desktop computer

EBL ebooks can be downloaded to a laptop or desktop computer for reading offline. Download options are located in the Download tab in the EBL Online Reader

If you are working on a public computer that is shared by others (e.g., in your library), you should read ebooks online via the EBL Online ReaderOn your personal computer, all downloaded ebooks are read via Adobe Digital Editions (ADE), a separate application from Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader designed specifically for reading ebooks that have been secured with Adobe's digital rights management (DRM) software. In order to download and read EBL ebooks offline, you must first install ADE.

When you download an ebook, open the ebook from the browser download window. ADE will launch automatically, or you can start it manually and then drag your ebook onto the application icon. Or, choose File > Add to Library and browse for the file on your computer. When you use ADE for the first time, you will be prompted to authorize your computer by entering Adobe ID information. If you do not have an Adobe ID and password, you can create a free Adobe ID. Authorization with an Adobe ID is not necessary to read EBL ebooks online. When you are prompted to authorize your computer, you can check the "I want Authorize my computer without an ID" option and click the Authorize button.

However, if you wish to transfer ebooks between devices, you will need to authorize your computer and any other ADE compatible devices with an Adobe ID. ADE has an "Authorize this computer" menu item that you can use after initial installation. If you want to download an ebook to your computer and then copy it to another device for reading offline, both devices must be authorized with the same Adobe ID. Adobe Digital Editions FAQ provides additional information.

In your personal ADE library, banners on the ebook icons will indicate the length of your offline access to a title and whether access has expired to any ebooks. If an ebook expires and you need additional offline access, you may download it again in the EBL Online Reader.

You can scroll or click to turn pages, or navigate using the Table of Contents. The Reading menu at the top provides additional viewing and navigation options. You can also search the text of the ebook, create bookmarks, highlight text and add notes. Printing and copying permissions are half of the allowances provided in the EBL Online Reader, which allows a user to print up to 20% and copy up to 5% of any ebook’s total content.

Note: ADE is compatible with popular screen reading software, and integrates with operating system accessibility features, including support for high contrast modes and resizing of ebook text. Additional information about accessibility is available at http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions/features.html.

Download to a mobile device

EBL ebooks may also be downloaded to and read on ebook readers and mobile devices that support Adobe Digital Editions (ADE). A list of devices that support ADE is available at http://blogs.adobe.com/digitalpublishing/supported-devices.

Download options are located in the Download tab in the EBL Online Reader.

To download an EBL ebook to a mobile device such as an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet, or Android phone, download and install the Bluefire Reader app for Apple iOS or AndroidWhen you use Bluefire Reader for the first time, you will be prompted to authorize your device with an Adobe ID. Authorization is required to read ebooks that have been secured with Adobe's digital rights management (DRM) software. If you do not have an Adobe ID and password, create a free Adobe ID. You will only need to enter it once. The Bluefire Reader FAQs provide additional information.

Downloading will automatically save the ebook in your Bluefire Reader library, where it will be available for reading offline. Tap on a cover image or book title in your Library to read an ebook. Tap or swipe to turn the page, or navigate using the Table of Contents. Tap the center of the screen to view the Book Navigation Control Bar for additional options. You can also search the text of the ebook, adjust settings, and create bookmarks and notes.

If an ebook expires and you need additional offline access, you may download it again in the EBL Online Reader
