First-Year Writing Library Instruction

Three-day Outcomes

First instruction day

  1. Students will articulate types or pieces of evidence appropriate to their research project. (5 min)

  2. Students will determine credibility, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose of source material. (25 min) 

  3. Students will experiment with at least one database to find statistical evidence and "get closer to the source." (10 min) 

Students should formulate a research question out of their topic by the next class period.

 

Second instruction day

  1. Students will experiment with the library catalog to broaden or deepen their evidence pool. (10 min)

  2. Students will develop a list of keywords from their research question. (25 min) 

  3. Students will experiment with at least one database to test their list of keywords. (10 min) 

Students should continue to search in the databases and the catalog by the next class period.

 

Third instruction day

  1. Students will demonstrate the steps of discovery from popularly reported online news item to original source. (5 min) 

  2. Students will experiment with at least one news database to find popular evidence. (10 min)

  3. Students will apply the week's lessons through individual work time. (20-30 min)

  4. Students will reflect on the week’s activities in order to transfer knowledge to future college-level research projects. (5 min)

Two-day Outcomes
