eBooks -- How to Find and Download

Instructions for finding and downloading e-books from various vendors.


Safari TechBooks Online features over 30,000 titles from publishers including Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, IBM, O'Reilly. It covers the technologies most essential to users including certification, enterprise computing, Java, Linux/Unix, Web development, Windows, XML, and more. 

Search eBooks


1. Books and Short Cuts These links will take you to lists of all books and short cuts available at UNO. Short Cuts are documents that provide details on a very specific topic or that introduce new technology or advances before a great deal of information is publicly available.
2. Featured Categories Categories that are popular among all Safari customers.
3. Top Level Categories

 All books are assigned to at least one top level category and up to four sub categories. Safari Tech Books Online has 21 top level categories; Safari Business Books has 13 top level categories. Click on the triangle icon to see the sub categories.

There are 8 primary subject areas:

  • Desktop & Web Applications
  • Digital Media
  • Engineering
  • Information Technology & Software Development
  • Math & Science
  • Personal & Professional Development
  • Product (Excel, iPhone etc)
  • Vendor (companies)
4. Browse Publishers Click here to see a list of publishers (Microsoft, Adobe and many others) with links to the books.
5. View All Titles This button takes you to a complete list of all books and Short cuts available at UNO.
6. Top Titles Top Title ranking is based on all Safari TechBooks Safari users.

Read Online

1. This Book Click here to go back to the Catalog Page, where you can get more information about the book.
2. Search The Search feature is hidden by default, open by clicking on the triangle icon. You can search the whole book, a chapter or a page. The result list can be sorted by relevancy or page order.
3. Contents This tab contains the table of contents of the book. By clicking the triangle icon, you can view every part of a chapter. The title of the page you are currently looking at is marked in bold.
4. Blue Bar

The blue bar above the text contains the following functions: 

  • Print -  this will only print the page you are currently viewing. You are only able to print 1 page at a time.
  • Email this page  - you can send an email which contain a link to the page you are currently viewing.
  • Thumbnails
  • Zoom
  • Two pages view
  • Touch scroll - adjust scrolling sensitivity for touch devices.
  • Grab Mode
  • Fit width/Fit page
  • Full screen/Normal screen
  • Next/Previous page
  • Durable page URL
  • Show search terms (search terms are by default marked in yellow)

When holding the mouse over the buttons in the top bar, you can see which keyboard shortcuts you can use (for instance key v for Thumbnail view). In some cases there is also a button for HTML view.



Safari does not provide the option to download eBooks. To view their eBooks, follow the directions to read online in the section above.


In order to print a page from a Safari eBook, go to that page in the online reader. Click on the Print button that is indicated in the image below. This will only print the page you are currently viewing. You are only able to print 1 page at a time.
