Nebraska does not have a statewide waste/excess pesticide disposal program. Two options are to hold onto the products and hope that Nebraska will have a disposal program in the future or to pay for disposal themselves. If they choose to hold on to the products they should periodically monitor the containers for leaks and store them in a cool dry place where flooding is unlikely. Ideally they should be stored under lock and key. If they want to pay for disposal, the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality provides a list of several commercial firms that can consult about, transport, store, or dispose of waste/excess pesticides. The purpose of the Integrated Waste Program is to ensure proper management of solid waste. Non-hazardous solid waste is typically generated by and collected from households and businesses and disposed in municipal landfills. The regulations provide technical criteria for waste management facilities and land application of special wastes. Solid waste regulations are Title 132 – Integrated Solid Waste Management Regulations.

Hazardous chemical products can be found in almost every home in Nebraska. Such products include antifreeze, bug spray, glue, motor oil, and solvents. A substance is labeled as hazardous if it can catch fire, if it will react or explode when mixed with other substances, or if it is corrosive or toxic. Take a look around your home or garage and you'll find many hazardous substances. They may seem harmless sitting on the shelf or being used properly, but they can be harmful to humans, our pets, the land in which we grow our food, and the water for drinking and bathing.

This guidance document will provide information regarding pharmaceutical waste disposal and infectious or biohazard waste considerations. Personal care products are often included in pharmaceutical waste discussions and will be here too. Regulatory requirements will be stated and best management practices applicable to the majority of what we will now call “medical waste” (MW) will be presented to assist in making informed disposal decisions. The prime reason for this document is to provide information to assist keeping medications from entering our precious surface and groundwater. The Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in concert with Extension Specialists, Extension Educators, and Extension Assistants provides educational and training programs that address health, the environment, economic well-being, and pesticide safety.

The other icons in the map represent transfer stations, materials recovery facilities, and construction and disposal areas. It should be noted that the amount of waste sent to the landfills within a region does not necessarily represent the amount of waste generated within that region. Waste is often transported across regional and state borders.
