Afghans fought three wars (1839-42), (1878-80) and (1919) with Great Britain. Each time, England invaded Afghanistan from its base in India. The British feared that a weak Afghanistan would perhaps encourage Russia to invade India through Afghanistan. The British wanted to control Afghanistan to prevent Russians from advancing on India.
The Criss Library has rich resource materials on the Anglo-Afghan Wars and Afghanistan's relations with Great Britain with a number of books by British authors from the Arthur Paul Afghanistan Collection available from Digital Commons@UNO.
