Open Access and Scholarly Publishing @ UNO

This guide introduces open access and how UNO scholars can support and publish their research and creative activity open access

Open Access Publishing Agreements at UNO Libraries

The UNO Libraries support open access (OA) publishing at UNO through participation in the following agreements with scholarly publishers, which enable UNO authors to publish their articles OA in selected journals at no cost to themselves.

Biochemical Society: Open Access Agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted on or after January 1, 2024 for publication in Biochemical Society (Portland Press) journals can have their work published Open Access (OA) at no cost to themselves. The associated charges (known as Article Processing Charges, or APCs) are covered by the Libraries. The agreement covers articles published in any of the Biochemical Society's seven journals, including the two fully Open Access journals, BioScience Reports and Neuronal Signaling

A corresponding author must be affiliated with a University of Nebraska institution in order for the article to be eligible for the APC waiver. Corresponding authors should ensure that they correctly specify their University of Nebraska affiliation as their “organization” during the article submission process, in order to be identified as eligible by the Biochemical Society's systems. This will involve clicking “Validate Institution”, then choosing the appropriate institution from the list that is presented.

Eligible articles will be published Open Access under a Creative Commons license, with the author retaining copyright. In most cases, the corresponding author may choose between CC BY or CC BY-NC-ND licenses. Authors who do not wish to publish their article Open Access can opt out by emailing editorial@portlandpress.com

Cambridge University Press: “Read and Publish” Agreement

Ended in 2023 - Big Ten may be renegotiating this agreement.

UNO authors whose articles are accepted on or after January 1, 2021 for publication in most Cambridge University Press journals (see a downloadable list of participating journals) can choose to publish their work Open Access (OA) at no cost to themselves. The associated charges (known as Article Processing Charges, or APCs) are covered by the Libraries. Eligible article types include research articles, rapid communications, review articles, brief reports, and case reports with a UNL-affiliated corresponding author.

Authors should specify their UNL email address and/or ORCID identifier when submitting their articles, to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them correctly as eligible for the OA publication charge waiver. In the case of "hybrid" journals offering both OA and non-OA publication options, authors will be presented with the choice of publishing OA or not.

For information about the agreement, and a description of the steps involved for authors, see the Cambridge University Press information page for the Read and Publish agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

Elsevier Open Access Publishing Discount

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted for publication in Elsevier journals on or after September 18, 2023 may be eligible for a 10% discount on the Article Processing Charge (APC) for publishing their work Open Access (OA). The discount applies to articles published by University of Nebraska corresponding authors in the majority of Elsevier's "hybrid" journals (journals publishing both subscription and OA content). See below for a list of eligible titles, as of September 2023.

Corresponding authors should specify the University of Nebraska institution with which they are affiliated when submitting their article. When the article is accepted for publication, the acceptance notification email will contain a link to Elsevier's editorial management system for completion of the "publishing journey". In the "Rights and Access" step, the author must choose a University of Nebraska institutional affiliation in order to apply the APC discount. There is the option to publish either under the subscription (paywalled) model, at no charge, or Open Access, with the payment of an APC. Authors choosing the Open Access option can publish under a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-ND Creative Commons license, with the authors retaining copyright; they will be shown the discounted APC price, and be invoiced for this amount once their affiliation has been validated.

For more information about the APC payment process, see Elsevier's "Publishing Journey" help page, under "Gold Open Access: Discount Agreement".

IOP Publishing: Open Access Agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliacne

Participating Big Ten Academic Alliance libraries have reached a transformative, three-year Read and Publish Agreement with the Institute of Physics (IOP), a further step in collective action toward the Big Collection. This agreement begins on January 1, 2023, and runs through December 31, 2025

This agreement supports unlimited Open Access publishing in eligible IOP journals, including 58 hybrid journals and 18 fully open access journals. Eligible corresponding authors from participating institutions (the University of Nebraska) may publish OA in these journals at no cost to themselves. There is no limit to the number of articles that can be published OA under this agreement. To qualify for no-cost OA publication, the article must be accepted in an eligible IOP journal between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2025 and have a corresponding author from one of the participating institutions.

To have their articles published at no cost to themselves under the terms of this agreement, responsible corresponding authors must identify themselves as BTAA institutional affiliates and use their institutional email addresses as part of the IOP publishing workflow.

PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine: Participation in the PLoS Community Action Publishing (CAP) Program via the Big Ten Academic Alliance

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted for publication in the Open Access journals PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine after January 1, 2021 will not be required to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). Articles with a corresponding author affiliated with any of the University of Nebraska campuses, or a corresponding author from another PLOS Community Action Program-member institution, are eligible. If the corresponding author is not from the University of Nebraska or another member institution, but some of the coauthors are, the APC will be discounted.  There is no cap to the number of articles published under this agreement between Cambridge University Press and the Big Ten Academic Alliance.

Authors should be careful to indicate their institutional affiliation when submitting their articles to PLoS Biology, PLoS Medicine, and PLoS Sustainability and Transformation to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them correctly as eligible for the OA publication charge waiver.

Wiley: Open Access Agreement with the Big Ten Academic Alliance

University of Nebraska authors whose articles are accepted on or after January 1, 2023 for publication in Wiley and Hindawi journals can publish their work Open Access (OA) at no cost to themselves. Fully OA ("gold") journals, as well as "hybrid" journals publishing both subscription and OA content, are included in this agreement; in the case of fully OA journals published by Wiley or Hindawi, articles must also have been submitted on or after January 1, 2023 to be covered by this agreement.

Primary research and review articles with a corresponding author affiliated with any of the University of Nebraska campuses are eligible. Authors should be careful to specify their institutional affiliation when submitting their articles, to ensure that the publisher’s editorial management system identifies them as eligible. When submitting an article to a Wiley OA ("gold") journal, select “My institution or funder has an agreement with Wiley…”, and then use the tool provided to find the correct account code to enter. In the case of Wiley "hybrid" journals, authors will be presented with the choice of publishing OA or not after the article is accepted.

OA articles are published under a Creative Commons CC-BY license, with authors retaining rights in their work. Note that it is not possible to choose the OA option after the article has been published.
