2D Scanning Information

2D Flatbed and Large Format Scanning

2D and flat media scanning operates on a first-come-first-serve, UNO student priority basis. Both machines are available to patrons with an official university login.

The CPL offers two devices for flat media scanning. For scans larger than 12" x 18" and up to 44", we have a Contex IQ 4400 large format scanner using NextImage software on a Windows PC. For traditional flatbed scanning up to 12" x 18", we have an Epson Expression 10000XL scanner using the EpsonScan Software attached to one of our iMac Pros.

For flatbed scanning on the Epson, media should be dry, free of dust or glitter falloff, and pose no risk of scratching the glass bed. Files can be saved to device desktop of the user profile for upload to cloud or external storage.

Large format feed-through scanning on the Contex poses risks to both the media being processed, and to the device by media. As such, media and materials to be scanned on the Contex are subject to review and approval by CPL staff prior to operation of the scanner. The following guidelines are to be followed for this approval:

  • No media allowed that is thicker than 2mm.
  • Materials with movable mediums such as charcoal, conte crayon, or pastels need to be sprayed with enough fixative that a person could run their finger across the surface without smudging it. CPL staff will request that you run your hand across the media for this test. Any residue created or alteration of the media will be asked to seek fixative application before use of the scanner.
  • Artworks including abrasive materials such as thick stroke acrylics risk scratching the surface of the glass on our feed-thru scanner. These works are subject to refusal of machine use, and will be suggested for photography recording.
  • Delicate artworks should not feed-through scanned, as the rollers might rip the material.

In circumstances where scanning of media or artwork with either device is not possible or denied, CPL staff will aid patrons in using our GreenScreen Studio and photography equipment to create digital images of media, subject to space availability.
