3D Scanning Information

3D Scanning

The CPL offers 3D scanning services to UNO students, faculty, and staff for any academic and personal purpose. Community members can make a 3D scanning request for any non-commercial purpose depending on availability and subject to priority.

For static objects between 2”x3”x2” and 8”x12”x 8” (roughly the size of a soda can up to a shoebox), patrons can leave their object for processing on our NextEngine 3D scanner. Glossy or black objects do not scan well, and we request the object be light colored with a matte finish, be coated in talcum powder, or spray painted in flat-white primer if at all possible. CPL Staff can apply talcum powder on-site or a water washable spray talc compound at request to achieve the best possible scanning results. The CPL is not responsible for damage or staining to the original object caused by the application of talcum powder after approval. Objects will be scanned in at least two orientations with results stitched together and realigned. Please allow 3 to 5 days processing time and specify if you would like STL or OBJ mesh file on completion. Appointments can be made by email, with objects dropped on in-person at the CPL.

At this time the CPL cannot scan large objects or full human figures. Patrons wishing to try objects larger than are viable on our NextEngine should try an external photogrammetry process.
